Perform instrument disinfection correctly and prepare the disinfection bath correctly

How is manual immersion disinfection for instrument disinfection carried out correctly?

And how do you use a disinfection bath correctly?

Instrument disinfection is an important measure for compliance with the hygiene plan.

Instrument disinfection measures are carried out either manually or mechanically in a disinfection bath.

The use of medical instruments requires hygienic reprocessing in order to prevent infections in humans.

Suitable protective clothing is always worn for the necessary work steps. This consists of gloves, a protective gown, a face mask and protective goggles.

This is to prevent possible contact between pathogens and chemicals and the skin or mucous membranes.

How do you prepare a disinfectant solution correctly?

Concentrate and water together make the disinfectant solution. When preparing the disinfectant bath, it is essential to maintain the correct concentration according to the dosing table or label of the working solution. Practical dosing aids from the manufacturer are a useful aid. Never add other cleaning agents to the solution.

How to carry out manual immersion disinfection:

Step 1: Follow the manufacturer's instructions

Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the label of the instrument disinfectant.

Step 2: Correct dosage

Correctly dose the disinfectant concentrate using suitable dosing accessories and a dosing schedule.

Step 3: Remove soiling

Remove coarse, organic soiling with a disposable cloth or brush.

Step 4: Insert and allow to take effect

Place the opened instruments for disinfection completely in the disinfectant solution, free of air bubbles, and close the lid. A tub with a capacity of 3 liters is suitable for instruments up to approx. 29 cm in length.

Observe the prescribed exposure time. Longer exposure times can damage the instruments!

Step 5: Rinsing

Rinse instruments thoroughly with water and then dry.

Then check for cleanliness, integrity and functionality and sterilize if necessary.

Step 6: Inspection

Check the instruments. If there is any residual soiling, the instruments should be cleaned again with an appropriate brush or cloth and steps four and five should be repeated in this case.

What else needs to be considered during manual instrument disinfection?

During the entire process, it is important to ensure that the disinfected instruments are not recontaminated.

Instruments are inserted and removed from the solution bath using either a clamp or tweezers.

In principle, all instruments or tools that tolerate water can be placed in an aqueous disinfectant solution. Instruments or tools that are not compatible with water should instead be sprayed with an alcohol-based disinfectant solution

or wiped with a disinfectant wipe. Cosmetic brushes and brushes should not be placed in the solutions, but washed out.
